THE SOFT TISSUE LASER

Laser is an acronym for “ l ight a mplification by s timulated e mission of r adiation“. Experimental lasers have been used in dentistry since the 1960s. However, only recently have they been approved for the use of treatment for the dental patient and, with time, are becoming more commonplace.

There are four basic uses for the dental laser:

1) cut and remove gum tissue;

2) hardening filling materials;

3) speeding the process of bleaching teeth;

4) cutting through tooth structure. 1

In 2004, our office began using for the first time a soft tissue laser (the first use listed). In this case, the concentrated light energy is used for the shaping and modification of the soft tissues in the mouth, primarily the gum tissue for various procedures. The laser acquired is the Odyssey Diode Laser manufactured by Ivoclar Vivadent, Inc.; it is purported to represent the latest in solid state diode laser technology for the use of dental soft tissue modification and preventative care. 2

The use of the laser is said to promote faster healing, lowers the risk of infection, and reduces pain after treatment as compared with other means of soft tissue modification such as electrosurgery. 1 The laser is an important adjunct in restorative, cosmetic, and preventative dental procedures. If the occasion arises whereby you are in the need for the use of this laser, further information related to the treatment being provided will be given at that time.
